Spark of Love Toy Drive

On Friday, December 9, 2011, Members of LAFD Crew 3 attended the Spark of Love Toy Drive Stuff a Bus event at the Westfield Topanga Mall in Canoga Park.

Members showed up at approximately 0500hrs to assist in gathering gifts and loading onto buses to transport to a central collection point located at Frank Hotchkins Memorial Training Center.

Crew 3 Members did an outstanding job in volunteering their time assisting ABC 7's very own Garth Kemp in collecting toys and filling up 5 buses with toys that will be distributed to families in need. Thank you to the Crew 3 Members and everyone that helped out with this great event!

RED FLAG Pre-Deployment - Wind Storm

On December 01, 2011, LAFD Crew 3 was Pre-Deployed due to Red Flag conditions from low relative humidity with high winds. In the over night hours prior to Crew 3 mobilizing, extremely strong wings pounded the Los Angeles area.

Shortly after Crew 3 was activated, they started responding to "trees down" calls that were reported to be blocking streets and on cars and houses throughout the area. Crew 3 responded to Alana Dr in the Sherman Oaks area to find an approximately 50 foot pine tree completely blocking the road and resting on a car and home.

Crew 3 Members quickly went to work cutting up this large tree that had done significant damage to one car and a home. Crew 3 was able to cut the limbs from this tree to expose both the damaged car and home.

Crew 3 requested a loader from the LAFD Wildland Fuels Management Unit to respond to lift the remaining tree from the car to prevent any further damage and open the road. Within approximately an hour the tree was removed from the car, home and roadway. Great Job both Crew 3 and the Wildland Fuels Management Unit!

RED FLAG Pre-Deployment - Wind Storm

PART II

Crew 3 got a short break after removing a tree from a house and a car that had blocked the roadway. We were able to get a quick break for lunch and then OCD notified us of another tree.... Crew 3 responded to Lana Lada Dr in the Glassel Park area to find a approximately 90 foot pine tree that had fallen the night before.

This tree came down on 2 cars causing significant damage as well as snapping a power pole and taking numerous power and communication lines down with it. The Department of Water and Power had already been out and shut down power to the area. This tree had blocked access to approximately 20 homes which stranded numerous residents and disabled emergency vehicles to gain access to the area if they were needed.

Crew 3 Members took on this extended operation by slowly removing portions of the tree to gain access to the homes in the area. As work continued, the Wildland Fuels Management Unit responded with a loader to assist in access and removal of this tree. With the assistance of numerous chainsaws and the loader, a bulk of this tree was removed to allow access to these homes and removal of the damaged vehicles without causing further damage.

After approximately 8 hours of work these residents were able to get in and out of the area. More importantly, If any of these residents had a fire or medical emergency, responding resources would be able to reach them in a timely manner. Within 24 hours after Crew 3 completed this task, the Department of Water and Power was able to access the area and restore power by replacing damaged power lines. Great job Crew 3 and Wildland Fuels Management Unit!

US&R Training Site Clean-Up

On November 28, 2011, Crew 3 spent the day clearing weeds and debris at the Urban Search and Rescue training site located at Fire Station 88 in Sherman Oaks.

This Clean-Up project was to prepare the Drill Site for a upcoming Structural Collapse Technician Course that is scheduled to begin in December 5. This class utilizes this site to train and teach students to utilize a variety of US&R tools. With the site overgrown with weeds, the props that are used would have been inaccessible.

Crew 3 did an outstanding job at clearing this site in preparation of this 2 week long class. Additionally, Crew 3 assisted in setting up the props for this class by removing broken concrete and and steel and stacking new lumber that will be used during the course of the class. Thank you to the LAFD US&R Unit for involving Crew 3 in this project, as well as continued support.

Downtown Shops Tree Project

On November 15, 2011 , LAFD Crew 3 traveled to the Downtown Supply and Maintenance Shops to complete a Tree Trimming Project. The area we concentrated on was located along the Triple Shop Driveway.

Trees along the east side of the facility had overgrown to the point that it made access difficult. With the assistance of the Shops, Department of Transportation and the Department of Sanitation, Crew 3 was able to access, cut and dispose of these overgrown trees.

Members of Crew 3 worked for a majority of the day trimming these trees to make them look better and remove the low hanging branches that interfered with the access of both LAFD Heavy and Light Apparatus that need to traverse this driveway when visiting the LAFD Shops.

RED FLAG Pre-Deployment

On November 2, 2011, LAFD Crew 3 was pre-deployed with numerous other resources throughout Southern California due to a moderate Santa Ana wind event.

Crew 3 was staffed up at 0700hrs in preparation of this wind event. Late the night before 3 small fires were contained just as the winds began to blow across the valley. Shortly after Crew 3 was mobilized, they traveled to the Lake View Terrace area to check on and mop-up 2 of these 1/2 acre fires.

Shortly after noon, Crew 3 responded to a one acre fire located in the Hansen Dam Recreation Area. Members assisted resources from the LAFD, LACoFD and the USFS in quickly gaining control of this Brush Fire. With the coordinated effort of these three agencies the fire was quickly knocked down. Crew 3 assisted with line construction and mop-up.

Verdugo Peak Repeater Project - Day 2

On October 19, 2011, Crew 3 returned to the Verdugo Peak Repeater Site to continue work on the fuel break that will provide protection to this valuable infrastructure.

Crew 3 traveled by Crew Carrier this day towing a chipper to start to dispose of the material cut days before. After making the 1 hour drive to the site, Members again began to cut and remove dead dry fuel from around the site.

With more brush being added to the piles, a few Members began the task of chipping the material that had been stacked. With the chipper running non-stop, the project started taking shape.

After another long day, a large fuel break is now in place to provide protection to this facility. Thank you to the hard work of the Crew 3 Members that took part in both days to make this project a success. The Verdugo Peak Repeater will now be safe if a Brush Fire occurs in the area.

Verdugo Peak Repeater Project

On October 17, 2011 Crew 3 was flown in LAFD's Fire 5 to a remote repeater site located in the Verdugo Mountains. The trip to this mountain top site was to initiate a Brush Clearance Project to remove approximately 2 acres of brush and downed trees located around one of the LAFD's repeater sites.

After Crew 3 was shuttled by helicopter to this mountain top, they hiked the last 1/2 mile to access the site. Crew 3 was met by a Captain of the Fire Communications Unit which maintains the vital communication equipment at this site.

Crew 3 Members quickly went to work with chainsaws and hand tools to begin this tedious task. Brush and numerous dead trees that remained after a fire in 2009 were cut and stacked for chipping at a later time.

After a full day of work, Crew 3 had a large fuel break partially completed. This fuel break will provide needed protection to this site, which sustained damage due to a fire in 2009. Crew 3 will again visit this site to complete this project. Thanks for all the hard work by those Members that participated.

Stone Canyon Helispot Maintenance

On October 14, 2011, LAFD Crew 3 completed a maintenance project at Stone Canyon Helispot in the Santa Monica Mountains above the Sherman Oaks area. This Helispot was overgrown brush and grass which limited it's use for helicopter filling operations.

Members spent the day cutting and chipping trees and brush to improve this site. After only a few hours this site was cleaned up and ready for use.

With the work of Crew 3, this remote helispot has been made twice the size and will be ready for use just in time for the Santa Ana season. Thank you for the efforts of the Crew Members that took part in this project.

Oat Mtn Repeater Site - Day 2

On October 10, 2011, Crew 3 finished the project at the Oat Mountain Repeater Site. The completion of this project has created a large fuel break around the site. In addition to providing protection to our site, adjacent sites are further protected reducing the threat to them and possible exposure to our site if they were involved due to a wildfire.

With the work completed by Crew 3, we can be confident that this facility will be safe as the Santa Ana Winds are right on the horizon. Thank you to the Members of Crew 3 that took part in this project.

Oat Mtn Repeater Site

On October 6, 2011 Crew 3 traveled to the LAFD Repeater located at Oat Mountain high above the San Fernando Valley. Crew 3 spent the day clearing brush around the repeater site to protect this vital infrastructure in case of a threat by wildfire.

After a long day of work, Crew 3 had created a large fuel break that will be helpful in protecting this site. Crew 3 will spend another day at this site to complete the work they started in the near future. Thank you for the hard work Crew 3!

Helispot Maintenance

On October 4, 2011 Crew 3 spent the day doing helispot maintenance. Crew 3 traveled by ground to Kittridge Tanks Helispot and was picked up by LAFD Fire 1

After a safety briefing, they flew from helispot to helispot and spent a short time at each site clearing brush that are hazards to helicopters that use the sites during water filling operations.

With the Santa Ana season approaching, Crew 3's hard work will likely payoff making these operations safer for our pilots when working to help us on the ground. Crew 3 Members had a great time and were very excited for the opportunity to fly around for the day in one of our helicopters. Thank you Air Ops for the opportunity!

2011 Brush Press Conference

On September 23, 2011 Crew 3 attended the 2011 LAFD Brush Press Conference at the Chatsworth Helispot. Crew 3 served as a back drop for Fire Chief Brian Cummings address on the severity of this brush season. Crew 3 was also on site to show off our program.

Crew 3 had the opportunity to get a close up look at the resources that assist them in the suppression of Brush Fires. Members of Crew 3 also had the opportunity to meet Chief Cummings and ask him a few questions. Thank you to all that participated in this Press Conference.

September 11th Memorial Ceremony

On September 11, 2011, Crew 3 attended the FHMTC 911 Memorial Ceremony. This Ceremony was to commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the terrorist attacks that forever changed the way we look at life. Crew 3 Members got dressed up in their Dress Uniform to be part of the Uniform Detail for this Ceremony. The Uniform Detail included agencies from all over Southern California.

Crew 3 was honored to be part of this memorable day. May we "Never Forget" those that we lost on September 11, 2001.

Mandeville Fire Hose Day

On September 10, 2011 Crew 3 traveled to Fire Station 59 which was the Hose Depot for the hose and fittings that were removed from the Mandeville Fire.

Crew 3 Members stretched out, washed and rolled over 300 sections of hose and sorted through numerous fittings that were used on the Mandeville Fire. After rolling the Hose, Crew 3 organized the hose in piles for the appropriate stations to pick up. Thank you to all the Crew 3 Members that helped wrap up this incident by attending this Call Out.

Mandeville Brush Fire - Day 2

On September 7, 2011 Crew 3 was reattached to the Mandeville Brush Fire for Mop-up and hose removal. Crew 3 spent the morning cutting line and mopping-up a few spot fires that were located. Later on this 107 degree day, Crew 3 removed hundreds of feet of hose from the steep and rugged hillside. Though well over 100 degrees for most of the day, Crew 3 Members worked extremely hard to accomplish the task that was given to them. Great work Crew 3!

MANDEVILLE BRUSH FIRE

On September 5, 2011, Crew 3 answered a Emergency Call Out for a Brush Fire. Crew 3 was originally ordered for a Fire in the Sun Valley area. As Crew 3 Members assembled a new Brush Fire broke out at 3682 Mandeville Canyon Rd. Crew Members quickly staffed up the Crew and were redirected to respond to the 40 acre "Mandeville" fire.

Upon arrival to this incident, Crew 3 was attached to Div A and began cutting line. Crew 3 Members worked extremely hard for numerous hours cutting heavy brush to secure the northern flank of this stubborn fire. Crew 3 worked with 2 Los Angeles County Camp Crews to complete this task.

The top (eastern) edge of this fire was stopped by the Upper East Mandeville Fire Road that Crew 3 had spent two days clearing brush from just a week before. Good job, Crew 3 Members that took part in this Emergency Call Out!

FIRE ROAD MAINTENANCE - DAY 2

On September 2, 2011, Crew 3 continued work on a fire road in the mountains above the San Fernando Valley clearing brush along Upper East Mandeville fire road. This is was the second day on this project. This will be beneficial in allowing apparatus traverse the mountains that separate the San Fernando Valley and West LA in the event of a Brush Fire. As we approach our Santa Ana season, Crew 3 will be completing projects like this to assist in the preparations for this critical time of the year.

FIRE ROAD MAINTENANCE

911 MEMORIAL CLEAN UP DAY

On August 30, 2011 LAFD Crew 3 spent the day at Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center cleaning up and preparing for the 911 Memorial Service that will take place on September 11, 2011. The Crew Members focused their attention on cleaning up the are around the 911 Memorial as well as other areas around the Training Center. Along with Crew 3, Los Angeles County Crew 13-3 assisted with the clean-up project.

MRCA Project Day 2

On June 23, 2011, Crew 3 spent a second day in the Santa Monica Mountains and completed a project that we had started for the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) along Mulholland Drive.

After the roadside project was completed, Crew 3 completed opening up an overgrown trail in Franklin Canyon. The Discovery Trail was overgrown, making it nearly impassible for hikers.

In nearly 100 degree heat, Crew 3 opened up this 3/4 mile trail and made it safer for the public to use. While completing this trail Members even chased away 4 large rattle snakes so they would not bother people that may want to enjoy this newly maintained trail. Thanks to the Members that assisted with this project!

MRCA Project Day 1

On June 21, 2011, Crew 3 started a project for the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority (MRCA) in the Santa Monica Mountains.

Crew 3 completed a brushing project along Mulholland Drive between Laurel Canyon and Coldwater Canyon. A two mile section of this roadway has been overgrown with zero clearance to help prevent a fire from starting or providing a barrier if a fire had started.

After a long day, Crew 3 had cut the brush back approximately 5 - 10 feet along this 2 mile section of roadway. This project was used by Crew 3 as training in which Members were able to use both hand tools and chainsaws that are utilized on the fireline.

2011 FIELD TRAINING DAY

NATIONAL FIRE ACADEMY TRAINING

On April 16, 2011, Crew 3 Members were presented the 2011 Training Outline. Members were given direction on how to successfully enroll and complete National Fire Academy Courses that will be required to be certified as a Firefighter Type II (FFT2) and be a "Fire Ready" Member of Crew 3.

At this training day Crew 3 Members were presented S-110 Basic Wildland Suppression Orientation. Along with this course, Members left with approximately 50 hours of on-line training that will be required to attend the upcoming Field Training Day that will complete their initial training.

Good Job Crew 3 Members! We'll see you in a month to build upon the on-line training that you are completing!

2011 PACK TEST

On March 12, 2011, Crew 3 hosted the 2011 Pack Test for Crew 3 Members and New Candidates. This event was held at the Hansen Dam Recreation Area.

Members taking the test were required to quickly walk (no running) 3 miles while carrying a 45lb pack. It is required that this be completed in under 45 minutes to be able to continue in the training that will be provided to enable Crew 3 Members to participate in the 2011 Fire Season.

Both Crew 3 Members and New Candidates came out and gave 100%. We had a great success in the number of young men and women that completed this test of physical endurance.

Congratulations to those that successfully passed the 2011 Pack Test. We look forward to the upcoming training that will enable us to be "Fire Ready" and able to answer the call. Great Job!

2011 PACK TEST PREPARATION

On March 9, 2011, a few Crew 3 Members came in and assisted in the preparations for the 2011 Pack Test. These Members carefully loaded packs with the 45lbs that is required for Members to carry during the Pack Test. Additionally, these Members loaded water, ez-ups, ice chests and other equipment needed to administer this test. Thank you for the assistance of these dedicated Members!

LOSS OF A LOS ANGELES FIREFIGHTER

2011 CREW 3 ORIENTATION FOR NEW CADETS

Crew 3 held an Orientation on January 22, 2011 for individuals that are interested in becoming LAFD Crew 3 Cadets. This Orientation was held at LAFD's Frank Hotchkin Memorial Training Center. With over 75 in attendance, we should have a great opportunity to expand Crew 3 to reach nearly 100 Cadets! Good luck to those that attended and are going to continue on in the process!

2011 CADET REGISTRATION - PROGRAM UPDATE

On December 12, 2011 and December 14, 2011, Crew 3 Members attended a Call Out at Fire Station 88 to complete their 2011 Cadet Registration Packets. The Members that completed these packets were given an update on the Crew 3 program. This Update included training plans that are in the works for the 2011 Fire Season. As every year since the inception of the program, Crew 3 is expected to expand the number of Cadets involved in the program for the 2011 Fire Season.

TREE PROJECT AT LAFD DOWNTOWN SHOPS

On November 22, 2010. Crew 3 completed a tree trimming project at the "Downtown Shops". This project was much needed to cut back the overgrown trees located in the front parking area of the Shops.

Members of Crew 3 arrived early and loaded equipment to tackle these trees.

With the loaned equipment from both Street Lighting and Sanitation, Crew 3 quickly went to work using a cherry picker (street lighting) and chain saws. After a long day, Crew 3 had filled two 40 yard roll-offs (sanitation) with the material cut from these trees.

By the end of the day, the once overgrown trees took on a whole new look. The parking spots around these trees and the building itself was magically revealed once this project was complete. Thank you to the Members of Crew 3 that assisted with this project.

CHIEF CLARK FUNERAL

Crew 3 Members were called upon to assist with the support functions of Battalion Chief Clark's Funeral. Though only a few Crew 3 Members knew Chief Clark, many stepped up and made time to help in working behind the scenes to make this service special for both the family and friends of Chief Clark.

PRE DEPLOYMENT

On September 27, 2010, Crew 3 was Pre Deployed again for Extreme Fire Conditions due to the high temperatures and low relative humidity. Temperatures records were broken all over Southern California with temperatures downtown reaching 113 degrees.

During this pre deployment, Crew 3 attended a Memorial at Frank Hotchkins Training Center on the 30th anniversary of the tragic fire that took the life of Firefighter Frank Hotchkin. Crew 3 has taken pride in completing projects at the Training Center to maintain the facility. This was a great opportunity for Members to see how important it is to "Train as if your life depends on it".

Once back in Sherman Oaks and after enjoying a warm quiet day, Crew 3 Members challenged eachother in a race running stairs to the top of a local parking structure. A challenge was thrown down for a race between Members of 3A and 3B. When times were compared on the roof of this 9 story parking structure only 2 seconds separated the two teams. Great job Crew 3.

PRE DEPLOYMENT

On September 25, 2010, Crew 3 was Pre-Deployed for Extreme Fire Weather Conditions. As we enter the height of Southern California's fire season, the LAFD will pre-deploy resources in the areas that may be affected by wildfire.

Temperatures are well above 100 degrees with single digit relative humidity's, so the decision was made to activate Crew 3 to augment the increased staffing in the San Fernando Valley. Members quickly answered the Call Out and mobilized to be ready at a moments notice in case of a fire.

Crew 3 spent the day training and doing tool maintenance as well as tackling a tree trimming project at Fire Station 88. With temperatures around 107 degrees, Crew 3 Members worked to complete this project. Crew 3 demobilized after a long 14 hour day in which no fires occurred. Thank you to those that participated!

Battalion Chief Gary Clark

Members of Crew 3 extend our condolences and are deeply saddened in the passing of Battalion Chief Gary L. Clark, who died suddenly while off-duty on September 22, 2010.

Chief Clark began his career with the Los Angeles Fire Department in January 1980, and at the time of his passing was Commander of LAFD's Battalion 14 'C' Platoon, serving the southeast San Fernando Valley.

FEMA DRILL

On August 29, 2010, LAFD Crew 3 assisted CA-TF 1 (white team) with a mobilization exercise. Crew 3 assisted with the check-in and mobilization of this Sherman Oaks based FEMA US&R team. Following the mobilization, Crew 3 assisted with drills that were performed by CA-TF 1 Members. Thank you to all Crew 3 Members that took part in this exercise.

PRESS CONFERENCE

On July 29, 2010, LAFD Crew 3 attended a Press Conference addressing the fire danger in the Los Angeles area. Crew 3 served as a back drop at this press conference with Mayor Villaraigosa, Fire Chief Peaks and Assistant Chief Varela.

Coincidentally, shortly after this press conference, Los Angeles County had 2 major brush fires in the North County area. This was a reminder of the potential for wildland fires in Southern California.

RUNYON CANYON BRUSHING PROJECT

On June 29, 2010, Crew 3 completed a brushing project for Battalion 5. A fire hydrant in Runyon Canyon was over grown and inaccessible. As we enter into another fire season, we want to be able to locate and utilize a water source such as this in the event of an emergency.

Members of Crew 3 utilized this project to complete some saw training as well as open up access to this fire hydrant. This fire hydrant is located approx. 50 feet off the roadway and buried in the brush shown above.

After a few hours of cutting and chipping the brush, the fire hydrant was exposed as shown above. The work that Crew 3 completed will allow access to this invaluable water source. Crew 3 Members worked hard to complete this project in just a few hours! Great job to all those Members that took part in this "Call Out".

SEPULVEDA PASS BRUSH FIRE

On June 28, 2010, Crew 3 responded to a Brush Fire in the Sepulveda Pass. Crew 3 was just wrapping up a project at FHMTC when the Briarwood Fire broke-out.

Members of Crew 3 quickly finished loading up our tools and equipment at the project site and responded to Crew 3's first fire of the 2010 Fire Season.

Crew 3 arrived on scene and went to work constructing handline around the 2 acre fire along side the NB 405 Fwy. Members quickly completed this assignment and assisted in the mop-up of this fire. Good Job Crew 3!

FHMTC CLEAN UP PROJECT

On June 22, 24 and 28, 2010, Crew 3 traveled to the LAFD Training Center to continue a Clean-Up Project started earlier in the spring. Members continued work on cutting and removing grass, brush and trees around the facility.

Crew 3 Members continue to display their Dedication, Pride and Teamwork in working to make the Frank Hotchkins Memorial Training Center the pride of the LAFD. Once again, Members showed up in force to improve the appearance of our Training Center.

As we have since the inception of Crew 3, we are glad to dedicate time to this ongoing project.

Thank you to the In Service Training Members that supported Crew 3's efforts during these 3 days. Thank you to Crew 3 Members that took part in these "Call Outs", your tireless efforts are noticed and appreciated!

CAMP PENDLETON - 2010 FIRE SCHOOL

On June 8, 2010, Crew 3 traveled 100 miles from our home base to attend USFS/Camp Pendleton Fire Department 2010 Fire School. The long day started at 0545hrs for Crew 3 Members.

Crew 3 was assigned to the Kilo Operational Area in which we were dispatched to training fires through out the day. These fires included: 'Fish Fire' (1 acre), 'Shark Fire' (25 acres) and the 'Starfish Fire' (1/2 acre). Crew 3 Members worked hard and safely to cut line and assist with progressive hoselays on these incidents. Members that attended had and excellent opportunity to apply skills that were recently covered in our Annual Training. Thank you for the hard work Crew 3!

FEMA CLEAN-UP PROJECT

On June 1, 2010, Crew 3 hosted a Call Out to assist CATF-1 in preparing the FEMA Cache for a 2 day inspection. Crew 3 Members worked with Members of CATF-1 to ready their tools and equipment as well as facility for a important inspection. The LAFD US&R Unit as well as CATF-1 has been supportive of Crew 3 since our inception. We are happy to assist these two units when call upon! ENCINO NEIGHBORHOOD COUNCIL

On May 26, 2010, Crew 3 attended the Encino Neighborhood Council meeting with Battalion 10. Crew 3 attended this meeting to introduce ourselves to the community in which we often work. This exposure to the community was a great opportunity for Members to educate themselves on the importance of fostering strong community ties. LAFD CREW 3 - FIRE READY

2010 TRAINING

On May 1, 2, 15, 16, 22 and 23, 2010, Crew 3 Members completed their Mandatory Training. During these 3 weekends, Crew 3 gathered at FHMTC and Fire Station to complete this Annual Training.

Members completed NWCG required course work for a Type II Handcrew, which included: S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior, S-130 Firefighter Safety and S-134 L.C.E.S. Members also took part in multiple Practice Fire Shelter Deployments. Though tedious, Crew 3 Members did an outstanding job and like always, learned alot! Now that the book work and initial training is complete, Crew 3 Members will now start to get out in the field and start to learn the basics of "Crew Life" as they hike, swing tools and get dirty! Good Job Crew 3!

FHMTC - ANNUAL CLEAN UP

On April 13, 26 and 29, 2010, Crew 3 traveled to FHMTC to complete a Clean-Up Project for the In Service Training Section. FHMTC is the pride of the LAFD as our Training Facility that Members attend daily to sharpen their skills and receive training to maintain their level of service to the City of Los Angeles.

Since the inception of Crew 3, nearly 4 years ago, we have taken pride in keeping this facility looking good for all to enjoy. Crew 3 Members spent 3 long days clearing weeds and polishing up this facility. Thank you to all the Members that were able to attend these Call Outs and worked so hard!

2010 PACK TEST

On April 18, 2010, Crew 3 hosted it's 2010 Pack Test. Both, New Members and Returning Members took part in completing this test with great success!

FIRE STATION 88 - CLEAN UP DAY

On April 10, 2010, Crew 3 completed a clean-up project at Fire Station 88. With the above average rainfall that was experienced this last winter, plenty of weeds have grown in the hills as well as Fire Station 88.

Crew 3 spent the day clearing weeds and cleaning up around the "Disaster City" area in preparation of the City wide Earthquake Drill that will take place at this site. Crew 3 Members worked hard all day and did an outstanding job! Thank you to those Members that took part in this project!

FHMTC Clean Up

On Sept 2 and 9, 2009 Crew 3 Members traveled to FHMTC to complete a clean up project in preparation of the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony taking place on Sept 11, 2009.

As Members from across the nation will come to attend this Ceremony, we wanted to take part in making sure out Training Center is looking good.

Crew 3 started the day with a hike lead by F/F Romero and F/F Jorgensen. After a short hike and PT the Crew spent the day cleaning the planters that line the front if our Training Center. Crew 3's work to help clean up is appreciated by all. Thank you for all your hard work!

Apparatus and Tool Maint

On August 28, 2009, Members of Crew 3 spent the day in temperatures well over 100 degrees working on tools and equipment. Due to the heat and fires burning in the area, Crew 3 staffed 3-B in case any new fire broke out. Members worked hard to detail both Crew Carriers and sharpen and paint tools.

Crew 3 Members "Counted In" lunch at Fire Station 88 and were included in a game for dishes! Needless to say, a few Crew 3 Members lost and were selected to clean up the kitchen. Thank you to the Members that took part in this day!

Bell Canyon Fire

On Sunday August 23, 2009, Crew 3 was requested for a Brush Fire in the Bell Canyon area of the West San Fernando Valley. Crew 3 Members quickly answered the call and were enroute within 1 1/2 hours of request.

Upon arriving on scene Crew 3 was quickly put to work and assisted LACoFd Handcrews to grid and mop-up this 8 acre fire in steep terrain. Members taking part in this Emergency Call Out worked hard to complete the assignment given traversing the steep terrain. Great work done by Crew 3 once again! Thanks for the hard work!

Freeway Fire

On August 5, 2009, Crew 3 was requested to assist with an approximately 60 acre Brush Fire in the Eagle Rock area. Crew 3 quickly responded to the Call Out and responded to the fire to assist "Freeway" IC.

Crew 3 quickly went to work to finish constructing handline and assisting with mop-up operations. Crew 3 Members assisted both LAFD, Glendale and LACoFD resources in completing these assignments. Crew 3 Members worked hard in these extremely hot and steep conditions. Thank you to all the hard work by Members that took part in this 'Call Out"!

Battalion 12 MTZ Brush Drill

On July 29,30 and 31, 2009, Crew 3 took part in the LAFD Battalion 12 Mutual Threat Zone Drill. This Drill was held at Hansen Dam Park and included numerous agencies that would be working together at a fire in the North-East San Fernando Valley. Crew 3 Members were introduced to Members of the LAFD as well as the other agencies attending. After the Drill, Members of Crew 3 took part in training exercises set up by the Crew 3 Foremen. Battalion 10 Drill

On July 12, Crew 3 had a Call Out to attend Battalion 10's Brush Drill. Crew 3 worked with Companies from Battalion 10 and performed line construction while the Engine Cos. supported them with a hoselay. GETTY FIRE

On July 08,2009, Crew 3 had an Emergency Call Out to respond to the "Getty Fire" located in the Sepulveda Pass. This afternoon fire quickly raced to the top of a very steep hill consuming approximately 80 acres of brush

Crew 3 was quickly activated and arrived on scene to assist the Major Emergency assignment along with mutual aide resources. Members tooled up and hiked the rugged terrain to go to work on Division Z to assist with constructing and expanding containment lines.

Crew 3 assisted LACOFD Handcrews with constructing handline, cutting through thick brush and Leap-Frogging with adjoining crews to complete the line... After a few hours of tough work, Crew 3 was released to return back home and close up shop for the night. Crew 3 Members worked hard and did a great job! Thank you for the quick response by all who participated!

4TH OF JULY

On July 4, 2009, Crew 3 Pre-Deployed due to the high fire potential associated with this Holiday. This was the first Call Out for the 2009 Fire Season. With temperatures in the upper 90's, Crew 3 stood guard to respond to any Brush Incidents during the day.

With some of our newest Members taking part in this Pre-Deployment, Crew 3 traveled to the Sunland/Tujunga area and drilled for a few hours before staging for some of the events occurring throughout the San Fernando Valley. While working on a line construction drill, Crew 3 Members were given a fly-over by LAFD's Fire 3. During this fly-over, Members demonstrated how to safely complete their tasks while aircraft supports their efforts.

After a few hours of training, Crew 3 Members were treated to a BBQ at Hansen Dam Park by Battalion 12. The Crew was then staged in the North Valley poised and ready to respond to any fires that could occur during the numerous 4th of July celebrations that took place. After a relatively quiet day, Crew 3 returned to Fire Station 88 and shut down after a long day. The hard work put forth by all Members is very much appreciated!

Crew 3 - "FIRE READY"

Crew 3 Members completed their annual training on 05/31/2009 and are now officially ready for Fire Season 2009! Members completed NWCG classes during the month of May and over the last weekend put the final touches on our equipment to and Crew Carriers.

As training concluded Members also used tools and equipment that they will be using on the fireline to complete a clean-up project at Fire Station 88 and cleared weeds around the facility. Thank you to all Members taking part in both the training and this project. We are looking forward to having another busy and safe fire season.

Crew 3 Members Dustin Foor and James Gilley were on their way home to Tehachapi after completing day 4 of training and came across a structure fire.

Both Crew 3 Members acted quickly to notify residents of the house and make sure everyone was out. Then they took a safe location and utilized a garden hose in an attempt to keep the fire in check. Both Members, Foor and Gilley, did an outstanding job in acting on their instinct's. Their actions should make every Member proud! CREW 3 Training

Crew 3 Training is well underway! Crew 3 Members have completed 4 out of the required 6 long, tedious days of Mandatory Training. Training is moving forward as planned and June 1, 2009 is the projected date that Crew 3 will be available for 'Call Outs'!

To date, Crew 3 Members have completed S-190 and S-130 along with practice Fire Shelter Deployments and Proper Tool Use and Maintenance. Members completed a few small clean-up projects at FHMTC to show appreciation for the ability to utilize this facility for training. As the last weekend of training approaches, Crew 3 Members are getting ready for what may turn out to be another busy fire season in Los Angeles... THE PACK TEST

On 04/25/2009, Crew 3 Members completed the "PACK TEST", which is tests the minimum physical requirement for participating on a handcrew. Members of Crew 3 came out in force and gave it all!

The "PACK TEST" is a test of physical endurance and is required for the "arduous" work performed by Members of Crew 3. Test requires Members to complete: 3 mile walk (fast) in 45 minutes while wearing a 45 lb. pack.

Members of Crew 3 made it a point to not only complete the test themselves but to help push each and every Member to finish! What an outstanding day and thank you so much for the effort of every member of LAFD Crew 3!!!

FHMTC Project

On March 5, 2009, Crew 3 Members answered the call to complete a project at FHMTC, LAFD's Training Center. Work was completed on an area that will be designated as an "Outdoor Classroom" that will be used by all LAFD Members utilizing the Roof Prop. La Tuna Brush Fire

On February 2, 2009, Crew 3 was diverted from a planned project to help mop-up a Brush Fire that occurred the previous day. Crew 3 quickly assembled and once at the fire, assisted LAFD Engine Companies with finishing mop-up and hose removal. Crew 3 Members learned from this incident that brush season never ends in Southern California. Thank you to all the Members that worked hard to once again, show the value of this program!

Captain John Lawrence Funeral

On December 20, 2008, Crew 3 took part in the funeral for Captain John Lawrence. Crew 3 played an important roll in assisting with the logistics of days memorial. As the services at Fire Station 114, Cemetery and reception at Fire Station 28 proceeded, Crew 3 was constantly on the move to help with each phase of the services. Thank you to each and every Member of Crew 3 that participated and helped pay tribute to an amazing man!

GROSSMAN BURN CENTER CHRISTMAS PARTY

On December 7, 2008 A small handful of Crew 3 Members quickly answered the call to assist Fire Station 88 with the preparations and hosting of the Annual Christmas Party for The Grossman Burn Center, located in Sherman Oaks. RAIN PRE-DEPLYMENT

On November 25, 2008, Crew 3 was pre-deployed for the seasons first major rainfall. This rain event was just days after the Sayre Brush Fire that ravaged the North San Fernando Valley. The concern of mudflow was in the recent burn areas. Crew 3 was ready to respond and fill sand-bags and place barriers if any mudflow were to occur. Crew 3 converted the classroom at Fire Station 88 into a make-shift dorm and was on standby through the night. Much to our amazement, with the large amount of rain we received, no major problems were experienced. Thank you to all Crew 3 Members that took part in this precautionary measure!

Sayre Fire - Day 5

On November 23, 2008, Crew 3 returned to the Oakridge Mobile Home Park to prepare for the rain later in the week. As rains approach we want to make sure that the residents of this park remain safe and are not affected by run-off when the rains arrive.

Due to the high winds and fire a large drain system was littered with burned material, downed trees and brush. Crew 3 spent the day using hand tools and saws to clear these areas to enable them to work as designed when the rain begins in the next few days. As shown in the above photos, Crew 3 worked hard all day to open these drains. We are hopeful that they work properly to protect the residents from any type of mudslides or excessive mudflow. Thank you to all Crew 3 Members for your continued support to these residents!

Sayre Fire - Day 3 & 4

On November 18 & 19, 2008, Crew 3 was reattached to the Sayre Incident to assist 3 LAFD Taskforces, 2 US&R Companies and 1 USFS Strike Team to help the residents of the Oakridge Mobile Home Park return to their homes.

Crew 3 assisted residents of this mobile home park, which lost approx 500 homes, return to gather what they could from their homes. Crew 3 Members helped numerous people sift through ashes that used to be their homes and remove what memories that they could salvage. Members worked throughout the day to assist these fire victims in any way we could. On Wednesday afternoon, Crew 3 assisted UR88 to board-up and secure 28 of the approx. 100 homes that were saved or slightly damaged.

Every member of Crew 3 was honored to spend these 2 long days assisting hundreds of elderly people that lost nearly everything. Crew 3 was happy to help and we wish everyone that was effected by this fire the best in the recovery process.

Sayre Fire - Day 2

On November 16, 2008, Crew 3 returned to the Sayre Fire. After enjoying a big Base Camp breakfast, Crew 3 reported to the fire line for a long day of work and fire!

We were assigned to an area in the Sunshine Landfill to tie the landfill into the Sesnon burn, which would secure the Northwest fire and prevent it from burning into Santa Clarita Valley. Crew 3 spent the morning preparing an area that would be included in a firing operation. Members worked hard to cut brush away from power poles and a 24" plastic methane line to prevent damage when the area was fired out later in the day. Upon completion of the prep work Crew 3 hiked to a location in which LAFD Dozers had placed in a line and constructed handline from where the dozers had completed their work. After this line was 'tied in' Crew 3 worked to support LACO Crews as they started the firing operation. As the firing operation continued, Crew 3 held a position in a constructed safety zone and then assisted to mop-up with a hose lay that was put in place by a CDF Strike Team. Crew 3 Members watched an impressive and successful firing operation in which secured this area of the fire. After a long day, Crew 3 hiked out of the area back to the Crew Carriers and returned to Base for a hot meal. Crew 3 was released back to FS 88 for demob. Outstanding job Crew 3!

Sayre Fire - Day 1

On November 15, 2008, Crew 3 responded to the Sayre Fire in the Sylmar area, one of the largest wildland fires in LA City history. Upon checking in at the Command Post, Crew 3 was immediately assigned along the 210 fwy to mop up and secure the southern edge of the fire between Roxford and the I-5 fwy.

While the winds continued to blow in excess of 40 mph, Crew 3 Members worked with both LAFD Engine companies and a Type III CDF Strike Team. Units worked aggressively to secure this area to prevent hot embers from blowing across Foothill Blvd and threatening both single family homes and apartment complexes. After numerous hours working this area, this 2 mile section of the fire was cool and no longer posed a threat to structures in this area of the fire.

Shortly after dark, Crew 3 was released to Rehab at Base Camp in which they were fed and released to FS 88 to prepare to return the following day. Crew 3 Members worked extremely hard with adjoining forces to secure this area of the fire. Thank you for your hard work!

Red Flag Pre Deploy

On October 22, 2008, Crew 3 had a Call Out on the heals of the Marek and Sesnon fires for another day that in which we experienced Red Flag fire weather conditions. Members spent the morning rehabbing equipment used at the fires the prior week. Additionally, Crew 3 cleaned up the US&R training area in preparation for a large scale Mobex drill the following week.

As the afternoon heated up and the winds increased multiple small hot spots started to occur in the area of the Sesnon fire, so Crew 3 loaded up and moved to the north valley to assist if called upon. Members were mobile and patrolled for the remainder of the day within the burn area. The members of Crew 3 finished out the day with a 2 mile hike down Aliso Canyon in which they discussed how the fire burned and progressed. Thank you to the members that took part in the pre-deployment.

Sesnon Fire

On Tuesday 10/14/2008, Crew 3 went to the Sesnon Fire, which was in it's second day. Crew 3 was requested by "Sesnon IC" to report to FS28 for an immediate assignment. Crew 3 was assigned to Group II and was to assist a Cal Fire Type III Strike Team to secure and mop-up Aliso Canyon from Ranaldi north.

Crew 3 constructed handline along the drainage bottom and secured the line approximately 1 mile up the canyon. With the support of the Type III Strike Team, this area was secured and mopped up. Along the way, numerous snags were taken down to extinguish smokes of eliminate hazards from these trees. Upon completion of this assignment, Crew 3 was reassigned to Group III and continued to work with the same Strike Team and a Strike Team of LAFD Brush Patrols to mop-up around numerous structures in the Longacre and Sesnon area. Crew 3 was released from the incident in the early evening and returned to FS88 for demobilization. Crew 3 worked extremely hard over the 3 days in which these fires raged and will be prepared when winds and fire come again!

Marek Fire - Day 2

On Monday 10/13/2008, Crew 3 returned to the Marek Fire after a night of strong winds pushed it across containment lines and it was now burning into the Sylmar area. Crew 3 was assigned to Branch II and worked along Maclay St north of the 210 fwy.

Crew 3 spent most of the day trying to hold the fire east of Maclay at the southern end. Numerous times the fire flared up and spotted across the road in which Crew 3 and LAFD Strike Teams jumped into action to contain these spot fires. After a long day monitoring this area, Crew 3 was able to get into the area burning and construct fireline and work with a strike team to mop-up and contain this area of the still growing fire to reduce the chance of further spotting and threat to structures to the west. All members of Crew 3 did an outstanding job! Thanks for the hard work!

Marek Fire - Day 1

On Sunday 10/12/2008, Crew 3 had a scheduled 'Call Out' to complete a clean up project at FS88. In the early morning hours a brush fire had started in the Angeles National Forest and was quickly spreading into Los Angeles City. With thick smoke filling the sky above FS88, members quickly loaded up to respond into this wind driven fire.

As quickly as Crew 3 checked into staging, we were given an assignment to assist one of our strike teams along Little Tujunga Canyon Rd. Crew 3 assisted with mop-up along the road and then was reassigned to construct handline from Little Tujunga Canyon Rd to Kagel Canyon on the south edge of the fire. After a long day and just before sunset, Crew 3 had completed this task and secured the southern edge of the fire between these two canyons. Crew 3 Members did an outstanding job! Upon release from the fireline, we traveled into the established firecamp at Hansen Dam and enjoyed a fine firecamp meal.

FHMTC Project / Santa Ana Prep.

Crew 3 loaded up early on Saturday, October 11, 2008 and traveled to FHMTC to continue an ongoing project, "The Outdoor Classroom". Crew 3 Members met up with Engineer Shrode and removed a large amount of dirt to ready the site for concrete. Upon completion, this new site will be utilized by many LAFD Members in conjunction with the roof prop. Crew 3 is proud to be part of this project.

After traveling back to FS88, Crew 3 Members spent a few hours preparing tools and equipment for the possibility of 'Call Outs' due to the approaching Santa Ana Winds. Members finished the day with a thorough wash and detailing of the two crew carriers. As the Santa Ana Season approaches, Crew 3 is anticipating being activated to be part of the LAFD pre-deployments on Red Flag days. Thank you for the hard work! The entire LAFD will enjoy the effort that was put forth by the members of Crew 3.

Santa Ana Season

As the first round of Santa Ana winds approach, Crew 3 Members are preparing to answer the 'Call Outs' that may result. This time of year is the typical Santa Ana season in which we prepare for through out the year. These wind events typically continue into the late fall when rain arrives. Crew 3 was very active during the 2007 season and is ready to jump into action again this year on Red Flag days and if fires occur.

2008 Aircraft Press Conference

On September 26, 2008, Crew 3 hosted a 'Call Out' to attend a joint LAFD/LACOFD Aircraft Press Conference at Fire Station 114, located at Van Nuys Airport. Crew 3 Members were invited to provide a static display along with the Firefighting Air Force of both the LAFD and LACOFD.

Crew 3 was introduced to the media as one of the LAFD's newer resources to battle brush/wildland incidents in the City of Los Angeles. Members of Crew 3 were very pleased to be recognized and to met and speak with Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky, Los Angeles County Fire Chief P. Michael Freeman and Los Angeles Fire Chief Douglas Barry. Crew 3 would like to thank Captain Hogan of the LAFD Community Service Unit for including us in this media event. Additionally, we would like to thank Chief Foley, Section Commander of the LAFD’s Air Operations, for recognizing and introducing LAFD Crew 3 at this Press Conference.

2008 Deaf Festival

On September 20, 2008, Crew 3 once again assisted Los Angeles City Council Member Tony Cardenas. Crew 3 had a 'Call Out' to assist with the 2008 Deaf Festival, sponsored by Council District 6, at Woodley Park. Members assisted in setting up for the event, helped organize parking and offered help to individuals attending this event.

To get warmed up for the day, Crew 3 loaded up and went for a short hike in the Santa Monica Mountains. As always, Crew 3 Members performance and help was greatly appreciated. Thank you to Council Member Tony Cardenas and his entire staff for including Crew 3 in this great event.

FHMTC Project Day

On 09/06/2008, Crew 3 had a Project Day at Frank Hotchkins Memorial Training Center to help with some final clean up in preparation of the 9/11 Memorial quickly approaching. Crew 3 Members broke up into small squads to perform numerous tasks around the facility. With these small squads at work members were given additional training on the use of the chainsaw and rotary saw.

Crew 3 Members received specific instruction on the safe and proper use of the rotary saw used by the LAFD. Members were then able to practise cutting apart an old hose tower that needed to be disassembled into smaller manageable pieces. Members were also given further instruction on use of the chainsaw, which included falling a few dead trees and bucking them up.

Additionally, members helped with some finish grading in preparation of a concrete pour that will create an outdoor classroom next to the completely rebuilt roof prop. Thank you to all Crew 3 Members that participated and again showed pride and ownership in this facility!

Battalion 12 Brush Drill - B-shift

On Friday 08/29/08, Crew 3 took part in Battalion 12 B Brush Drill. As with the Drills on the other two shifts, the members of Battalion 12 along with companies from LACOFD and the United States Forest Service were introduced to LAFD Crew 3.

Crew 3 Members also gave a demonstration of their abilities by cutting line. With temperatures close to 100 degrees, Crew 3 did an outstanding job and worked very hard to show off what they can do.

Battalion arranged a short overview of aircraft available to the LAFD to battle Brush Fires. Air Operations had 3 helicopters attend the drill including the Heavy Lift Helitanker! Crew 3 Members had an opportunity to see the helicopters up close learn how they work to support their operations on the ground. Thank you to all members that attended the drill and especially Battalion 12 for inviting LAFD Crew 3.

Brush Fire 08/29/08

On 8/29/08, after attending Battalion 12's Brush Drill, Crew 3 came upon a Brush Fire in the Sepulveda Basin. Crew 3 was first on scene of a small, stubborn fire witch they quickly hiked to and with the support of LAFD ground and air resources quickly contained to approx 1 acre. The same aircraft that Crew 3 Members had just learned about were working closely with them to extinguish this fire!

All members worked extremely hard and did an outstanding job cutting line around this fire in very heavy brush. Thank you for the hard work of Crew 3 Members!

Griffith Park IV Fire

On Saturday, August 23, 2008, Crew 3 had an Emergency 'Call Out' to respond to a fire in Griffith Park. This was the forth fire in Griffith Park in the past four weeks in which Crew 3 responded and helped contain and extinguish. Crew 3 Members responded quickly to the 'Call Out' and made record time in mobilizing for this emergency. Once again all members taking part did an outstanding job!

Griffith Park III

On Saturday, August 16, 2008, Crew 3 had an Emergency 'Call Out' and respond to an approximately 50 acre fire in Griffith Park. Crew 3 Members responded to the call quickly and were mobilized and on their way to the fire in just an hour and a half from receiving the call.

As with the other two fires in the same area in the last few weeks, Crew 3 did and outstanding job in constructing line and working in conjunction with LA County Crews to put a line around the fire. Thank you to all members that responded to this 'Call Out' and again displayed how dedicated and hardworking our members are!

Battalion 12 Brush Drill A-Shift

Again, as on July 27th, Crew 3 took part in Battalion 12's Brush Drill. This drill was held for Companies on the A-shift. Crew 3 again had an opportunity to show what we do at a Brush Fire. Crew 3 worked to construct handline while Engine Companies performed a progressive hose-lay. Thank you to Battalion 12 and all participating Companies for welcoming Crew 3 and allowing us to display our skills. We look forward to working with all of you in the future.

Griffith Park Fire II

On August 5, 2008, Crew 3 had an 'Emergency Call Out' to assist with a Brush Fire that occurred in Griffith Park on Monday, August 4, 2008, in the late afternoon. Crew 3 Members were requested to continue with mop-up on this 5 acre fire in addition to improving the fire line containing the fire.

Crew 3 arrived on scene in the early morning to relieve a LAFD Engine Co. and completed a 100% mop-up operation on this fire, which is the second to occur in Griffith Park in just over a week. After mopping-up, Crew 3 removed approximately 3000 feet of hose that was used to battle this blaze.

With the response of LAFD Crew 3 to this incident the LAFD was able to free up local Engine Companies that otherwise would have been committed to this incident for a majority of the day performing these tedious tasks. Thank you for the hard work of Crew 3 Members.

Griffith Park Fire

On Sunday, July 27, 2008, Crew 3 responded to an approximately 25 Acre Brush Fire in Griffith Park near the Los Angeles Zoo.

Upon arrival, Crew 3 was assigned to Division A. Crew 3 quickly hiked to a starting point and began to cut line. After approximately 3 hours of cutting through medium brush, Crew 3 completed approximately 1000 feet of fire line along the west side of the fire. Along with LACOFD Crews, Crew 3 played a very important part in containing this fire and keeping it at 25 acres. Crew 3 Members did an outstanding job at their first fire of the year. Battalion 12 Brush Drill

On Sunday, July 27th, Crew 3 took part in the Battalion 12-C 2008 Brush Drill. Crew 3 was invited to perform a line construction exercise while battalion 12 companies performed a progressive hoselay. Crew 3 worked well with the local companies and completed approximately 5-6 chains of line. Prior to the afternoon session beginning the drill was canceled due to a fire in Griffith Park, in which Crew 3 responded. Thank you Battalion 12 for including Crew 3 in your drill!

Crew 3 'Fire Ready"

Crew 3 Members completed their annual training and are now ready to hit the fire lines. Crew 3 will be taking part in numerous 'Call Outs' in the next few months. These 'Call Outs' will be for both projects and fire assignments. Members of Crew 3 are anxious to continue to learn and are looking forward to future activations.

On May 31, 2008, Crew 3 Members began Annual Training for the 2008 Fire Season. As a handful of returning Crew 3 Members are attending training as a refresher, many New Members attended an orientation and joined LAFD Crew 3!
